President of the SCAA

SCAA Regional 3D Championship Information

Well it is that time of year where we are all chopping at the bit to get out and shoot some targets. Most have set some goals or bench marks for them to achieve for 2011. As you set out this weekend to shoot let’s remember that the object of this game is to put your skills of the game to the test and enjoy the range you are shooting. Let that club know that you had fun and appreciate their efforts in providing a place to shoot.  The SCAA has great clubs that offer the public a place to participate in practice ranges, local shoots and Championship Tournaments. Our rules are simple and the entry fees low.

In order for you to have an enjoyable year, be familiar with the rules. The SCAA has the rulebook on the website and most other archery organization do also. Know the class that you are shooting in and make sure you meet the requirements i.e. equipment or age.

Our SCAA 2011 3D Championship again requires that you shoot either the upper or lower State leg and the Final at Swamp Fox Archers club. Remember to complete the SC Circuit form to be eligible for the Championships.  The State legs will have shotgun starts 9am and 12pm Saturday and Sunday. The Final shoot will have only one (1) start time on August 6th at 10:00 am. At the conclusion of that shoot there will be a Banquet for the awards of the State Champions and Shooter of the Year. With 7 months to make plans we hope that there is a great turn out for the banquet which has been a goal of the SCAA to have for many years. Help us make this a success and attend.

The SCAA is proud to have Chris Norris as our new Vise-President. Chris has just what we like to have on our Board and in the membership and that is a passion for archery. Chris called me with many question and in some respects challenged me on some issues that were on the message board. After an hour or so I believe that he had a better understanding of what the SCAA was really about and that his ideas and the things that he thought would help improve the SCAA and its clubs were very similar. Our conversation ended with Chris telling me that if there was anything that he could do to help us let him know. Well I let him know that we needed a Vise-President. I reviewed the duties of that position and he accepted. It was presented to the Board at the fall meeting and he was unanimously accepted. What a great guy to step up and be an active advocate for the SCAA/NFAA.

Chris presented to the Board a SC Regional State Championship for the upper and lower state. A very good idea with no extra work for the clubs and that anyone could participate, shooter does not have to belong to any club or organization, just pay the onetime fee per year and shoot fee. To compete is simple, fill out regional registration form at your first shoot and pay fee, shoot at each club at least once in that region and the grand total at the end of the year is the champ. A shooter can shoot more than once at a club and the highest score will be used. A shooter can compete in both regions just pay the fee for each one. The fees are in the rules on website. For 2011 a shooter can compete in only one class and if they shoot both regions, the class stays the same. This is done so we can get our feet wet and have a year to iron out any issues we have. Give us a chance to get this going and then next year we can add or delete items. We have some good ideas on how and where this could lead us in the future, but for now, this year simplicity is what we need to fully grasp this.  This also applies to the shooters on getting familiar with the event. The fees that are collected all go towards the awards and the SCAA at this time gets $0. What else is so nice about this idea is that he had an idea, put a plan on it and is going to do the tracking. Many people have opinions but no solutions or a plan with certain criteria that needs to be equated into the plan and then who and how is it going to be administrated. Chris has done a fine job with all the above.

Please familiarize yourself with the rules. We have some very simple rules so that we can have consistency from club to club, shooter to shooter, class to class and that are easy for the shooters to understand. Read the rules as they are and don’t try to read something into them. We have NO hidden agenda. They are simple, read them as simple rules.

I hope that you come out to our clubs and experience the thrill of great competition, superb courses and fantastic people. Archery does several things; it helps you to relax from the week. To step up to the stake and have a minute too yourself and concentrate on one thing is a great stress reliever from the world. Whether your shot was on the mark or not for that moment it was just you. When you and /or your friends pull up to a club it makes that club feel privileged to have you come shoot their range that they have worked hard on preparing for you. And without a doubt the friendship, camaraderie, competition and pleasure that are taken from that visit is wonderful.

Every club is unique to their community, the land they have to use and the people themselves, but what is common among them is they are hosting a shoot for YOU! Go and support their efforts at least once this year and renew some friendships or make new ones. Each of our clubs will make you feel welcome, like an old lost friend.

The best ways to increase attendance is attending and bring an archer.

I hope that 2011 is fun and enjoyable for you while participating at SCAA clubs.
